LARGS Players' annual pantomime has fallen foul of coronavirus.

The local amateur drama group, which is due to celebrate its 90th anniversary next year, would usually be in full rehearsal mode for their show which has graced the Barrfields Theatre stage for the last 47 years.

The production of Sleeping Beauty was being led by the creative team of Laura Edison and Sian Campbell, who previously produced the Snow Queen and Peter Pan.

Restrictions have meant there have been no rehearsals, no costume fittings, no sets designed and no band recruited for curtain up, forcing the group to cancel.

They hope to stage the show in 2021 - with the traditional festive panto now planned for Easter.

Players President Laura Edison said: "The production may look different when it is performed as socially distanced audiences look set to become the new normal, however the club has lots of ideas on how to safely present the show when allowed to do so.

"These past few years, we’ve worked to create a magical spectacle onstage for families and we have lots of creative thoughts how we can continue to do that, but at this time, without dates, we must postpone.

"Although the actors on stage are amateurs, the amdram panto scene employs and supports many professionals in the industry, including technicians and musicians, whilst also supporting professional companies involved in set and costume hire.

"All of these people have suffered a huge impact.

"Outside of the professions we support, there are many benefits for the amateurs on stage with the club bringing everyone together, in a fun, sociable and safe space where they can be themselves and create something special. Panto is often the first experience of theatre for many children."

Laura says she is especially disappointed to see the show postponed as the standard of the Players' pantos has risen in recent years.

She added: "We've really raised the amateur panto bar these past two years I think, so it is a real shame.

"It is important that the arts are protected at all levels, and we very much look forward to once again creating magic in 2021.

"This is merely the interval, we will be back, and hopefully very soon."

Barrfields Theatre itself celebrated its 90th anniversary this year, with the last show to take place at the much-loved venue played by tribute band Just Beatles on March 14.
