Council gritters are out tonight preparing priority routes.

This ensures that the most important roads, including work, school and primary health care routes stay open and safe during sub zero temperatures.

A North Ayrshire council spokesperson said: "Road surface temperatures are due to fall below freezing tonight.

"As a precaution gritters started treating priority 1 routes at 4pm."

With the onset of colder weather, the local authority treat roads on our priority routes across North Ayrshire.

It isn't possible to treat every road in North Ayrshire. This means, the roads with the least traffic and footfall, particularly small residential streets and rural roads, will not be treated.

For smaller residential streets, lanes and cul-de-sac's, the council provide grit bins for you to treat your own street.
