A budding young playwright from Largs Primary has made it to the final of a national competition hosted by The One Show.

Talented P6 pupil Rosie Strahan, 10, has reached the final of the programme’s ‘As You Write It — Your Play on Stage’ competition.

Rosie and her class were filmed at the school for an episode of the popular BBC programme, and the youngster was shocked to find out she had made it through to the finals out of thousands of entries.

The competition gives children and young people the opportunity to see their ideas come to life on stage.

The final three winners will receive a special award and have their play performed at The Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot when it opens in 2022.

Rosie says she was so excited when she found out she had made it through whilst the film crew were in the classroom capturing her reaction.

She said: “The play is about nursery rhyme characters. They have to find out who pushed Jack down the hill and they all go on a chat show and give evidence.

“I knew they were coming to film at the school because of the competition but I didn’t know that I was in the finals.

“It was really weird because they filmed for the whole morning but only a tiny bit made it on the telly.

“I only found out when they showed the video on the screen in front of everyone, and I was so excited.”

The delighted youngster is now going to develop her play with a professional mentor.

She said: “It is going to be amazing working with a professional because they can help me make the play better.

“I would be really happy to win it and I’m quite confident that I have a good chance.

“It would be very strange because I go to pantomimes and plays a lot and normally you have no idea who has written them, and this time it would be me.”

Mum Kirsty says the whole family is delighted with Rosie’s achievement.

She said: “I am so proud of her. She did it just to give herself something to do during lockdown and so to make it this far is fabulous.

“For her to be in the final and representing Scotland is really nice and the whole family are so thrilled for her.

“I am an English and drama teacher so it is nice to know that some of my passion has transferred onto her.

“The whole family is thrilled and we are hoping we will be able to get a minibus booked and all travel down to see it if she wins.”
