The Isle of Cumbrae was recorded as having the lowest temperature in Ayrshire last night.

The thermometer hit a bone chilling -8 degrees centigrade overnight in the wee small hours of this morning between 2-4am. However it hovered around that zone from around 10pm.

Prestwick in South Ayrshire only dipped as far as -6 degrees below zero.

The good news for chilly island folk is that it is forecast to heat up as the day continues, rising to 7-8 degrees Celsius later this evening.
However the recent sunny but frosty weather is to give way to milder rainy weather as the day goes on.

The freezing temperatures overnight echoed temperatures in Glasgow, with weather forecasters saying that the recent big chill has been the coldest since 2010.
