AN unusual tale about Sir Alex Ferguson’s coaching courses in Largs has resurfaced.

In a TV interview replayed after his recent death, former Dundee United manager Jim McLean spoke about his relationship with the Manchester United legend.

He revealed that instead of going on honeymoon following his wedding, Sir Alex instead left his wife to join McLean at a coaching course in the town.

McLean actually took credit for Ferguson passing the course, before he went on to become one of the most successful British football managers of all time.

The former Tannadice boss said: “We had a very good relationship actually. Early on, I think Fergie gave up his honeymoon to come and be my roommate down at Largs.

“He got married and he left his wife to come down on the coaching course. That is a true story.

“We were in the same room at the hotel, we were in different beds obviously, but we both sat our qualifying for the coaches certificate then.

“My notes got him through actually.”

The Inverclyde National Sports Centre in Largs has played host to a number of big name managers in the past who have arrived in the town to refine their footballing knowledge.

Famous faces to have taken the course include Jose Mourinho, Sir Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers and David Moyes.
