A LARGS gran battling a rare form of cancer has revealed her tumours have shrunk after two session of ground-breaking treatment.

Elaine Maltby says she is ‘on top of the world’ after being told the first two £40,000 sessions of chemo-saturation therapy had been a success.

The 54-year-old contracted a rare form of aggressive eye cancer, Uveal Melanoma, that resulted in the removal of her left eye three years ago.

In 2019, the cancer was found to have spread and now the treatment at a private hospital in England is Elaine's only hope of prolonging her life.

She says she is looking forward with positivity after scans showed a reduction in the size of her tumours.

She explained: “I had some news from my scans which were taken after my first treatment in February and I'm delighted to share it with everyone.

“I am feeling on top of the world right now as the scans have shown a significant shrinkage in my tumours.

“I didn’t think this could be possible as all of my other treatments so far have failed to have any impact.

“My oncologist in Southampton said that it is unusual to see such a good response after the first two sessions, so that is also very encouraging."

Elaine's improvement means that medics are now happy to continue her treatment plan - if the family can keep raising the money to meet costs.

The Largs gran is keen to pay tribute to the hundreds of people who have supported her fundraising effort so far – donating over £105,000 to her cause.

She said: “If it wasn’t for everyone’s help and support in raising funds, I probably would not be here now.

“I want to say a massive thank you to everyone for their continued support, we are astounded by their generosity.

“The donations have given me and my family the hope we were desperate for - and we nearly have enough money for my third treatment.

“If anyone stills has the energy to share my story, donate or has any ideas for fundraising, I would be so grateful.”

An online race night is being held next week to try and get Elaine closer to her £240,000 goal.

She added: “I am so happy that the money raised so far is making a difference to my health and I can now look forward to spending golden time with my family.

“But until the NHS fund this treatment for eye cancer patients, I am going to have to fund for the remainder of this treatment which is just not possible without this continued support.

“To each and every one of the people who have given, they are just brilliant. I must say a million thanks for making this treatment option a reality."

Elaine added: “I cannot begin to tell everyone how thrilled I am. Words cannot describe how I am feeling at the good news - I have to keep pinching myself.”
