A LARGS hotelier scooped a massive People's Postcode Lottery win - because she is the only person in her street who plays the game.

Lillian Wood this week won £30,000 on the draw - and told the News how she thought the phone call to tell her she had hit the jackpot was someone pulling her leg.

Lillian, who is the co-owner of The Woodhouse Hotel in Largs, says she is 'over the moon' at the windfall.

The 62-year-old, who has run the hotel for the past 15 years with husband Willie, plans to 'spoil her grandchildren' with the cash and also hopes to go to South Africa next year to see friends.

She said: "I got a call on Friday from someone saying I had won this money. I thought it was a wind-up but they told me to check the official website and sure enough I had won. "Around eight of the People's Postcode Lottery team then visited on Tuesday. We made them scones and coffee and everyone had a lovely time.

"I was the only one in the street who played, so I was the only winner. Nobody else played it in Barr Crescent but I think there may be a stampede now.

"The win has come at a good time after all the lockdowns - it is incredible just after re-opening the hotel to have won this."

Lillian said she had dreamed of winning since Largs couple Christine and Colin Weir scooped £161m on the Euromillions.

She added: "I remember when the Weirs won. Everyone was phoning up the hotel to ask if we knew them. You always imagine what it would be like if you won a big sum, so it was very nice to get the call.

"We have been to South Africa a few times in the past and we have friends out there so it would nice to return there at the right time."

After the hotel re-opening, Lillian says the win is more reassuring news.

She added: "At least we have got a bit of something behind us after all the struggles of lockdown.

"While we had government grants to support us, it has been a rotten 18 months but it has been great to see the hotel buzzing during the good weather."

"People come to Largs to enjoy what we do here and the hotel has been full of people since the weekend which has been good to see."

Lillian has two grandchildren - Teddy who is two, and seven-month-old Phoebe - but both live in England, and Lillian admits it has been hard not seeing her family.

She said: "I will now be able to treat them to some nice gifts."

Lillian netted the windfall when KA30 8PX was announced as one of the daily winners on the last round of People’s Postcode Lottery's draws.

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Judie McCourt said: “I’m over the moon for Lillian. I'm sure she will enjoy treating her family as well as taking a well-deserved holiday to South Africa.”

A minimum of 32 per cent of ticket sales goes directly to charities and players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised over £600 million to date for thousands of good causes in Britain and beyond.

Many good causes close to the winners have also benefitted from players’ support.

One of the charity beneficiaries is the Dame Ellen MacArthur Trust which is based at Largs Yacht Haven which takes young people recovering from cancer on sailing trips around the west coast of Scotland.
