MILLPORT has been hailed as one of the best value spots in the UK to buy a seaside retreat.

The island town topped Halifax’s list of the most affordable homes by the sea in Britain with an average property price of just £74,148.

Alan Hill, director of estate agent Robert F Duff and Co in Largs, says a home on the island is great value.

He explained: “House prices in Millport have risen considerably in recent years, however they still represent among the best value for those seeking property in a coastal location.

“Around 40 per cent of the homes on the island are in fact second homes that people come to during the summer season.

“Unlike other islands, second homeowners are not perceived as a threat and they are not pricing locals out of the housing market, as happens on Arran and Skye.

“Millport has a breadth of different properties from small tenement flats to large villas and as the study shows, Cumbrae properties represent great value when compared with other places.”

Two other North Ayrshire towns were named in the top ten most affordable list, with properties in Saltcoats and Irvine going for an average of £104,000 and £109,000 respectively.

However, Alan, who is also a local councillor, says that other factors have played a part in value property prices in the area.

He said: “North Ayrshire sadly has some of the highest rates of deprivation in Scotland and that is clearly reflected in house prices across the council area.

“The local authority and other organisations are working hard to tackle these issues - and we continue to make progress.”

Alan says it Millport's unique attributes have made it such a sought after destination.

He said: “Millport is an amazing destination with views that are second to none in Scotland. When you arrive you can feel the weight of the world lift from your shoulders.

“Cumbrae also offers great cycling, walking and running with a trip around the island being just over ten miles.

“The sailing waters are second to none and if that isn't enough you can kayak, sailboard or simply relax on the island's award-winning beach.

“After that there is no shortage of great places to eat and drink, from homemade chocolate in Brewbakers through to the island's very own gin.

“Millport is a fantastic tourist destination but is also a great place to live with an almost unrivalled quality of life.”

Salcombe in England was named as Britain’s most expensive town, with average property prices of over £950,000.
