YOUNGSTERS have earned praise from the community after Skelmorlie's road signs a new lease of life.

The charitable young Scout explorers gave more than 15 signs a fresh start as part of their outdoor activities.

Leader Jamie Craig says it was their way of giving back to the community after so much support over the years.

He explained: “We have been doing a lot of litter picking, so one of the leaders had an idea that we could clean some of the road signs around the village.

“He had noticed that a lot of them were dirty and we thought it would be something a bit different to do.

“It’s also a good way for us to give back to the community, because they always support us wherever they can.

“We got a lot of positive comments from residents as well so it was a good bit of advertising for the unit.”

The adventurous youngsters have been making the most of the good weather, with restrictions on indoor activities still in place.

Jamie said: “We've been down at Meigle Beach for most of our nights, cooking, playing games and fire-building. The explorers are enjoying it but we are still looking forward to getting back in the hall.

“It has been challenging putting together a programme with different activities and a lot of it becomes weather dependent too.”

Jamie added: “We have a trip down south for a camp provisionally booked just now in Brentwood in Essex.

“We have been there before, it has a great scout campsite and loads of facilities for us to do activities."

The unit is always looking for youngsters aged 13 to 17 to bolsters its ranks. For more information visit the Skelmorlie Explorer Scout Unit page on Facebook.
