IT could be power to the people in Largs town centre as an ambitious new plan to add four new electric vehicle charging points is revealed.

The town’s community council is spearheading the drive for the new facilities in the seafront and Gateside Street car parks.

It will open up the town to new opportunities, according to community councillor Robbie Stevenson.

He said: “We have met with the energy networks and our local councillors to decide where we could put charging points at the right cost.

“Following a lot of debate, we decided on two charging points in the seafront car park right in front of the amusements.

“The point will provide power for two cars and people will pay to enter the car park as normal to be able to use them.

“We have also decided on a point in the Gateside Street car park, beside the disabled bays, that will also charge two cars.”

Robbie says the points could be expanded in the future if they prove successful - and believes the scheme will be a big boost to the town.

He said: “We are going for seven kilowatt charge points which will take around two hours to generate 42 miles of charge, so people coming from Glasgow can drive back home.

“These sites then have room to expand as electrical vehicles usage increases and there is more demand.

“We have put in a funding application through North Ayrshire Council and we are hopeful of getting the backing for the initial charging points as outlined.

“It is all very positive and it has the approval of all the local councillors, so it is something great to look forward to.”

Independent councillor Ian Murdoch, who has been involved in the scheme, says the venture will bring Largs into line with other towns and cities encouraging the use of electric vehicles.

He explained: “I support the scheme and I was the only councillor that went to look at locations. I had a lot of input into identifying the location at the seafront car park.

“I had concerns about how it would affect the income of the car park, but we got over that by still having people pay for spaces.

“It’s the modern way. We’ve got to provide these facilities in Largs because you can see that there are a lot more electric vehicles on the roads here now.

“It would be inappropriate for us to encourage people to visit Largs, some of whom are driving electric vehicles, and not provide charging points for them.”
