A LARGS bowling club has seen an increase in membership in recent weeks - after the News highlighted their plight.

Douglas Park club secretary Bill Collins says recent coverage of the club's drop in numbers helped sparked fresh interest.

The club has also agreed to sign a two year lease of its home with North Ayrshire Council.

The Douglas Park Bowling Club has been running in Largs for over 70 years - and again the future looks bright after lockdown crippled the number of people coming through the doors.

Bill said: "We've almost doubled our membership - and the faces told us it was down to reading the article in the Largs and Millport News.

"Incredibly, we are now maybe going to have our busiest season in years. We even have the benches full of spectators cheering the players on.

"We have also been able to re-open the bar with all the Covid rules and regulations in place. We have managed to attract some younger members too - but we are always happy to welcome more."
