Thousands watched as it only took seconds to demolish the Inverkip Power Station chimney at the weekend this week back in 2013.
At 10pm on Sunday evening, it was history in the making as the chimney came tumbling down and collapsed into a cloud of dust.
Many congregated on Inverkip beach, while others gathered at the north end of Cumbrae, and Knock Hill in Largs, to get a glimpse of the historic moment as the structure, which was erected in the 1970s, bit the dust.
On the same week, islanders were left shocked by the noise of a loud explosion during the middle of the afternoon- with no connection to what happened at Inverkip a few days before. Residents in Millport heard ‘a really loud bang’ coming from the sea but there was nothing visible in the first instance.
Former island community council chairman Ian Frame said:“It was quite a boom-a tremendous bang. A lot of people heard it. Somebody said that it was apparently a controlled explosion behind Wee Cumbrae but I wasn’t aware of anything like that happening, so it was something of a mystery bang!”
