Barcelona FC once responded to news stories linking Largs Thistle with Lionel Messi after Colin Weir's Euromillions victory.
Back in 2011, veteran Thistle committee man Jim McGinty joked that Largs could perhaps put a bid in for one of the world's best ever football talents after the late Colin Weir won £161 million in the Euromillions.
Messi: 'No to Largs Thistle'
Colin Weir had said that he 'only had two Thistles in his heart' - in reference to Largs and Partick Thistle - and went on to provide funds for an all weather astroturf football park at the cost of £700,000 which is of great benefit to Largs Thistle's community teams and various youth footballing programmes.
Jim's cheeky transfer call travelled all the way to Barcelona with the Catalan club responding that Messi wasn't for sale and commenting 'we will not be selling him to Largs Thistle. Why would he want to leave one of the best teams in the world who play in the Champions League?'
This week, the Spanish giants have revealed that Messi will not be staying at the Nou Camp because of 'financial and structural obstacles' with the 34 year old being a free agent, with Paris St Germain and Manchester City both linked with the Argentinian ace.
