TRIBUTES have been paid to a Largs entrepreneur after his sudden death.

Bill Hamill, who passed away unexpectedly in hospital at the age of 79 on August 10, was a businessman in both Greenock and Largs.

Bill attended Lady Alice Primary and Greenock High before working at the former McKelvies bookshop and Rae's Stationers. He then set up the Greenock Book Shop with his wife Mattie, whom he married in 1964 at the Martyrs and North Church of Scotland.

Life-long friend Gordon Williamson, who had been best man at the wedding, travelled from his home in England to give an emotional eulogy at Bill's funeral service last week.

Bill later moved to Largs and joined Halkshill Bowling Club, where he became president in 2009 and also attended and helped at Clark Memorial Church, making recordings of services for the housebound.

He is survived by wife Mattie, son Kenny, daughter Judy and sister and brother Annette and Gordon. A collection was taken at the service for Diabetes UK.
