An iconic Largs building that was once North Ayrshire Council chambers is back on the market after a period of being under-offer.

Moorburn House was first listed in September and was originally on the market for offers over £1.1 million.

The asking price has now been reduced to offers over £995,000, and is being marketed by Corum in Largs.

The building was briefly under-offer but has now been put back on the property market.

The building was controversially sold off by the local authority in 2009 despite pleas from residents who wanted to save it from developers.

The council first bought the B-listed building in 1936 for £7,500 and used it as offices for more than 70 years.

Officials left the building in 2008 and it was put up for sale with an asking price of £325,000.

A campaign was set up to try and halt the sale, but was ultimately unsuccessful as the Greenock Road property and its surrounding land was sold to an Aberdeen oil tycoon and converted into a private residence.

Cunninghame Housing Association and the Largs Initiative group had sought to retain it for offices, while constructing 12 social housing flats and a car park in the seafront gardens.

The decision to sell sparked controversy at the time, with Labour councillor Alex Gallagher voting with the council, despite previously backing of the campaign to save the site.

At the time, Cllr Gallagher said: “I voted against the Largs Initiative offer with some reluctance.

“The affordable housing element of the proposal would have been welcome, but the sad truth is that the project is not tenable, at least in my opinion."

The description states: “The ground floor features a grand entrance hallway giving access to a formal lounge and dining room with broad aspects over the gardens to Largs promenade, the Firth of Clyde, Cumbrae and Arran in the west.

“A two storey L-shaped annex to the rear of the main building features a superb dining sized kitchen with a range of wall and base units and central island with solid granite benchtops.

“The ground floor level of the annex also contains ample storage, WC/cloakroom and an office/study.

“A living/family room, cloakroom and bathroom complete the accommodation on the ground floor.

“On the upper landing of the main portion of the property, the current layout allows for four double bedrooms.

“Three of the four bedrooms have ensuite facilities and the two front facing bedrooms enjoy panoramic views.

“There are a further three bedrooms and a bathroom in the upper level of the annex in addition to extensive storage.”
