THE crowdfunding campaign to help transform Millport Town Hall has hit a major milestone - with the backing of a Still Game legend.

The charity crowdfunder has raised over 50 per cent of its £25,000 target, which will help to pay administration costs and fill the refurbished venue with new items.

The campaign has won the backing of Still Game actor Gavin Mitchell, who played Boaby the Barman in the hit show.

The star tweeted his support for the project, urging his followers to help restore the building.

He said: “My heart is in Millport. Please, please, please donate to restore and save this wonderful building for the community in my favourite place.

“They’re so close and it means so much. Thank you.”

Mitchell is a well-known face on the island and has often spoken of his love for Millport.

Angie McCallum, chair of the Millport Town Hall Charity, says the actor’s backing has been a welcome boost.

She said: “I’ve seen him lots of times walking his dog past my house, and everyone knows he loves the island.

“It’s nice to have a high profile figure behind us, it’s getting the word of our campaign out to lots of people.

“We would love to invite him to our grand opening to thank him for his support when the time comes.”

Backing has come from as far away as ex-pats in New Zealand, a Scottish dancing group in Barcelona and an organiser of writing retreats in Massachusetts.

Angie says people’s love for the town and its hall was never in doubt.

She said: “It’s fantastic that it has gone so well so far, although I’m not surprised that people are getting behind the campaign.

“Millport has such a fabulous history and people are keen to be part of that and show their support.

“We won’t stop when we hit our £25,000 target, we will create a stretch target until we reach our end date of October 13.”

“We’re getting donations from all over the world, it's really uplifting."

The campaign has a range of exciting incentives which give people different ways of supporting the project.

These include a Millport Town Hall branded tote bag, chances to win three-night holidays and an opportunity to have a name as a legacy on the Town Hall through the ‘Brick in the Wall’ and garden plaque campaigns.
