AN innovative Largs building has been shortlisted for a prestigious award 2021 Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland award.

Inverclyde Sports Centre, which has attracted the cream of sporting talent from the Scottish rugby team to top Paralympians, is in the running for 2021 Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland award, which recognises outstanding architecture.

The revamped sports centre joins five others on the shortlist.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon joined Paralympians, Commonwealth Games athletes and local schools at its opening in 2017 following a £12 million redevelopment funded by sportscotland and the Scottish Government.

The winner of the Doolan award will be announced on November 30.

Its ribbon-like design – inspired by athletes breaking through a race ribbon - was hailed by judges for the way it 'weaves across the landscape, providing a dramatic and iconic new identity for the centre'.

They also praised the 'large windows which fill the generously proportioned building with light, enhancing athletes’ energy levels and making it 'a hugely pleasurable building'.

The centre was designed by award-winning architecture firm, Reiach and Hall. Morrison Construction delivered the project, and also built the neighbouring Largs Joint Campus in a partnership with sportscotland and North Ayrshire Council.

The RIAS Doolan Award was established in 2002 with a mission to find and celebrate the best building in Scotland each year.

The award is named in memory of its founder and patron, the inspired architect Andy Doolan, who died in 2004. The architects of the winning building receive a trophy and a cash prize, making it one of the most significant architecture awards in the world.
