A LARGS cafe has teamed up with an ambulance driver to help save lives in the town.

Jim and Margaret Stewart, who own Indigo Eats in Gallowgate Street, have joined forced with mercy crew member and Largs First Responder Jacky Nesbitt to raise cash for a new defibrillator.

The couple say helping to fund the piece of life-saving kit is their way of saying thank you to locals for their support since opening their doors six months ago.

They have organised a charity raffle with a host of prizes, including an AD Paton butcher's hamper, a basket of food from a local deli, a free MOT with Pearson's Garage and Italian Aroma Coffee gifts.

They hope to raise around £1,000 to pay and install the defibrillator somewhere that will best benefit the town.

The inspiration for the drive came from one of their regular customers Jacky Nesbitt, who is a local ambulance driver.

Margaret, 56, explained: "We thought the raffle was a good idea as it is for such a worthy cause. We are just trying to raise as much money as we can, but if we make enough to buy one outright, that would be fantastic.

"It will be positioned wherever is best for the town.

"You can never have enough defibrillators open to the public - and you never know when you might need one.

"One of our loyal customers, Jacky Nesbitt, is an ambulance driver and a first responder. She asked us if there was anything we could do in terms of fundraising for this and we were delighted to get involved.

"Tickets start at £1 and are available in the cafe. The big draw will take place on October 31 at 4pm."

Jim, 63, and partner Margaret arrived in Largs in May after 15 years running a successful cafe in Spain

The couple fell in love with the town during a visit to Scotland in February and decided it would provide the perfect place for a new venture - allowing them to answer a longing to 'come home'.

Jim said: "The move to Largs has been the best decision we ever made. We have had great support from the local community and we felt we wanted to give something back. This is our way of saying thank you."

The dog-friendly cafe is hoping to build on its successful first six months with live music nights, steak evenings, a Halloween bash and a Hogmanay party to bring in the bells.

Margaret added: "We have been here a relatively short time yet we already feel at home and an important part of the community. We have received some nice compliments from customers saying we have been a breath of fresh air."

The next big event at Indigo Eats is the Figaro Trio who will be providing some modern tunes with a jazz twist in the cafe on October 22.
