A LARGS woman walked over 100 miles in a month to raise £1,800 for charity in memory of her late dad.

Wilma Rodger, 68, pounded the pavements for Dementia UK, the disease that her dad Bill suffered from in his later years.

She decided to take up the challenge in tribute to him - and ended up walking nearly four times the original planned distance.

Wilma said: “My dad had dementia in his last few years of life and my mum found it really difficult looking after him.

“He worked in the town and a lot of people knew him, so I thought doing the challenge in his memory would be perfect.

“I had never taken on anything like this before but I wanted to help raise money for a cause that is close to my heart.

“The challenge was to walk a total of 30 miles in September, which is only one mile each day, but I decided to walk a bit more - and then I just kept going.”

Wilma says that despite her age, she pushed through and smashed the challenge with a bit of help from Mother Nature.

She explained: “In total I managed to walk well over 100 miles, which I think at my age is quite an achievement.

“I play a lot of bowls but I suffer from back problems so the longer I walked each day the more painful it was.

“I would go a couple of different routes around Largs, out to the Pencil or to Aubrey.

“There was only three days out of the month where I got wet, so I think I got very lucky during my challenge.”

The Largs native has raised more than ten times her original target and has praised people for their support.

She said: “I have been absolutely gobsmacked because my original target was only £150 and it just kept going up.

“It got off to a great start when a competition at Fairlie Bowling Club in my dad’s memory was rained off, so the £280 in entry money was donated to my fundraiser instead.

“People have been amazing and I even had to extend my closing date because there were so many donations coming in.

“I can’t thank people enough, and I can’t think of a better way to honour my dad than raising all this money for Dementia UK.”
