THE Largs Gaelic Choir hit the right notes as they picked up three awards at The Royal National Mòd in Inverness.

The choir’s quartet won their section at the prestigious event, taking home The Stornoway Gaelic Choir Cup.

They also won the The Marshall Stormonth Memorial Trophy and came joint first in the The Ian Crighton Memorial Trophy with Na Gillean-Brìghde.

The Largs Gaelic Choir Quartet is made up of Angus Allan MacDonald, Marie Ann McCord, Linda McCallum and Colin Fisher.

Secretary Marianne Cain praised the quartet for their notable achievements - and said it was made even more impressive by their lack of fine tuning.

She added: “It was unbelievable because they’ve had so little chance to practice between lockdowns.

“They beat out four other talented teams and it gives us another win to add to our collection of past victories.

“We’re very proud of the four of them and of all those who took part."

Marianne also hailed the full choir of 16 for their stellar performances, which will be shown on TV on Friday.

She explained: "Looking back on it we realise we have put in our best ever showing.

“It all fell into place on the day and we’ve had so much positive feedback from people.

“We have been selected to be in the highlights programme on BBC Alba which is such a thrill for our members.

“I have to praise our conductor Eilidh Johnson who has been superb. She’s very talented and has been a big part of our success.”

Marianne says that the pandemic made it tough for the choir to practice - but insists that there was one benefit that came from the new Covid regulations.

She said: “We had to do a lot of the practice sessions on Zoom, which was a little bit awkward.

“When we returned in person we had to stand a bit further apart than normal due to the restrictions and we discovered it actually helped a lot with the sound and gave us more stage presence.

“We are putting together a nice video compilation for people to watch online.

“We just want to showcase the Gaelic culture and put on performances across the country that everyone can enjoy.”

The Mòd celebrates Gaelic language and culture, with this year’s eight day festival held in Inverness from October 8 to 16.
