A LOCAL activist fears an piece of land that is being used as a car park has become a rat infested hazard at night - a year on after he first raised the concerns in the News.

Andy Adair says a makeover for the Bath Street area is long overdue - claiming it has now been a problem for over 15 years.

Andy has campaigned for the car parking area to be resurfaced and clean up, but the fact that the land is owned by multiple owners has made progress difficult.

The 82-year-old says items being dumped around the perimeter of the land is now attracting vermin at night.

He said: "I am amazed that this has not been attended to. It appeared on the front page of the Largs and Millport Weekly News last year and there's still been no progress.

"People will tell you that Largs is the jewel in the crown of North Ayrshire, but they are kidding themselves. As long as you have places like this eyesore as close to the town centre, people will be put off visiting.

"It is disappointing - the council have just decided that they are not going to do anything about this - they are turning a blind eye to it and paying us lip service while using the multi-ownership excuse.

"It is also attracting rodents at night. Some of the rats could have saddles on the back of them they are so big.

"It makes sense to do it up. It would be the idea car park for traders to use as they can go there at 8.30am instead of taking up the spaces in the Main Street.

"By 8pm there are rats running around everywhere. It is a rat infested - and a health hazard.

"It is an absolute tip."

The Bank of Scotland previously told the News that they shared the concerns of the community regarding the condition of the land.

They confirmed they share common ownership with other parties to certain areas but say the particular area being used for car parking is not owned by the them, which means that they are unable to carry out any maintenance.

The council said that the land 'continues to be in private ownership'.
