It was the end of an era at Hunterston B today as reactor 3 was taken offline for the final time at midday today.

The reactor was first switched on on February 6 1976.

When EDF acquired the power station it was expected to end generation in 2016. In 2012, EDF announced that the estimated end of generation would be extended,

Since it started generating electricity Hunterston B power station has produced enough electricity to power all of Scotland’s homes for 31 years

The Lifetime output is enough to power 77.9 million homes. Scotland has an estimated 2.5m homes.

Hunterston B has around 500 staff and 250 contractors working on site and an annual wage bill of £40m. The station contributes £54m to the North Ayrshire area each year.

Reactor 4 is expected to be switched off- signalling the end of nuclear power electricity generation at Huntereston - on January 7 2022.
