Weekly column from Largs Thistle legend George Wall who writes for the News

This weekend I add another story to my Football CV. I am part of the Northern Ireland Over 60’s squad competing in a tournament in Cardiff against England and Wales. You can’t make this story up. I got a phone call a few weeks inviting me to participate, seems I told someone my gran was from Northern Ireland, so me being me I said yes, as the saying goes
“ We don't stop playing football because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing football “
First game is against England on Saturday then Wales on Sunday .

Largs and Millport Weekly News: Troon equalise before winning 2-1 at Barrfields on SaturdayTroon equalise before winning 2-1 at Barrfields on Saturday

* It was a bad result for Largs on Saturday.
I did not see them getting beat in that game.

Safety in the league is far from certain so Thistle really need to pull off some good results.
A good thing was with exception of Kilbirnie winning results in the main went for them.
Based on the results though in the Lowland League last weekend it looks like there will be no relegation to the WOSFL which means only six teams will go down.
As I previously said looks like bottom three will not recover and go down with the seven teams above them in the mix for the other three. I also see that Ardeer will be in the rejigged second division next season - well done to them.
I went to the Port Glasgow v St Cadoc’s game on Saturday for two reasons.
One, I wanted to see St Cadocs as allegedly they have invested big money in their team. While they were on top most of the game and were the better team nothing really stuck out that made them for me a top team.
As a side note ex Largs favourite Mark Millar who came on as substitute for St Cadocs was sent off. The second reason, it was Port Glasgow ‘s last home game of the season and their penultimate game overall for the season and I wanted to see what they were all about after talking to their managers a few weeks ago.
The co managers there are ex Largs players Eddie Walton and Paul Coyle with another ex Largs player Andy Monaghan as coach. While they will never complete at the top level unless they find a way of stopping the best players in Inverclyde moving to clubs outside their area I thought there was a few young promising players there. The game finished 2-2 and although being on the back foot for most of the game the Port had two chances to win the game near the end.
I also could not believe their season is finished next week if their game at Dalry goes ahead. That would mean nearly five months without a game. How can that be allowed to happen ? How can you build a team and a club with that? Seems to me the league did not think the season through properly. Letting down the players and clubs. Speaking to some of the players they are looking for another team to continue playing this season.

* Congratulations to Liverpool on beating Chelsea on penalties in the final of the league cup in England. A good nil nil game with the excitement of the penalty shoot-out drama but a shame for the Chelsea sub keeper who missed - a strange late substitution which didn't have the required result.
