Largs Thistle legend George Wall's regular football column

My weekend was taken up playing for Northern Ireland veterans against England and Wales in Cardiff.
It was a great tournament - and I managed to qualify to play because of my Irish granny!
We beat England 8-1 and beat Wales 2-0 to win the trophy. In the Wales. v England game England won 2-0.

Largs and Millport Weekly News: George Wall and George Best now have something in common!George Wall and George Best now have something in common!
It was great to see players all over 60 years of age playing the beautiful game.
George Wall and George Best now have something in common, they both played with Northern Ireland.
There was no Scotland competing in this tournament as Scotland just don’t have the infrastructure or organisation in place to have Veteran teams.
The first over Veterans Home International competition at over 50’s was actually held at Inverclyde in Largs.
This was the idea of Jim Fleeting who was working for the SFA at the time. Scotland have competed at that level until the covid restrictions kicked in.
The man organising all of that was Jim Cockburn, who does a great job. Wales England and Northern Ireland have taken it to another level though.
Over 50 teams, over 55 teams, over 60 teams all of which are invitational in that you get selected to play.
It’s marketed as Fitness through Football & Friendship and supported by their FA’s.
It is great news that Largs have been given permission to install floodlights at Barrfields. I never thought it would be allowed however now that it can be done I really hope they manage to secure the funding. What a difference that will make to the club.
On the park for Largs had another poor result. Glencairn was where I thought three points was a given. It’s getting tight at the bottom of the league. The next game is the quarter final of the cup so a break from the pressure of the league but the next league games against Blantyre is a must win.
I am fully behind Mary Currie who has highlighted the problem of dogs fouling on the Astro grass community pitch in Millport . Dogs owners - please have a bit of common sense and do not allow your dogs to foul in this pitch - in fact don’t even take you dogs into the pitch!
