SCOTTISH hopefuls for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this summer have found a new home in Largs.

The Glasgow Rollin Rocks, who play in the British Wheelchair Basketball League, have been using Inverclyde National Sports Centre to play their home games and train.

The club, which consists of two men’s teams and a woman’s team, was forced to leave its Glasgow base during the pandemic due to a lack of facilities.

Head coach Gary Davidson, an ex-Paralympian, says the centre has been a lifesaver.

He explained: “I’m from West Kilbride myself and I am a regular user of the centre and I knew for a fact that the facilities were fantastic.

“It is more disabled-friendly that anywhere else of its type in Britain.

“Inverclyde is a huge help for us and saves us so much time and effort, which allows us to focus on our basketball.”

The Rollin Rocks is made up of players with all kinds of disabilities.

The club, which formed more than 35 years ago, linked up with the illustrious Glasgow Rocks several years ago.

Gary said: “A few years ago we started taking to the Rocks about becoming their official wheelchair basketball team, and it all just snowballed from there.”

The club is linked with Team Scotland, who will be competing in Largs in the coming weeks to try and make it to this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

Gary explained: “We play in the British league, which involves a lot of travelling.

“Most of our players also form the Scotland side for big tournaments like the Commonwealth Games and we livestream our games now for people to enjoy live if they can't come along."
