MORE than £9,000 has been raised to support a Millport teen battling cancer after the community rallied together for a sold-out fundraising night.

Jessica Miller, 17, is currently undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with leukaemia in August.

Generous islanders raised over £4,200 at a recent quiz night to top up £5,000 in donations pledged through an online JustGiving page.

The fantastic sum will help Jessica in her fight, with half of the money going towards the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Organiser Lesley Wylie said: “We were totally overwhelmed by the response. It was a brilliant night and everyone seemed to have a good time.

“We had lots of really good prizes in the raffle, including a four ball at Gleneagles and an overnight stay at the Blythswood Square Hotel in Glasgow.

“There was a disco afterwards too, it was just a fantastic occasion.”

Lesley says she wanted to raise some money for Jessica to help make her upcoming 18th birthday extra special.

She this week hailed the community for their 'incredible kindness'.

Lesley said: “To raise £4,000 in one night is unbelievable, and it was great that Jessica’s mum Sarah and other members of her family were able to be there.

“The island really gets behind their own.

“Thank you to everyone near and far who donated online, handed in cash, raffle prizes and to all who helped with the organising to make it a night to remember.”

She added: “No amount of money can change what Jessica has had to go through the last nine months, or what she still has ahead of her.

“Hopefully though knowing that her family, friends and the wider community are there to support her will make a big difference."
