A QUARTET of community champions have been rewarded for their work locally by a Largs supermarket.

Morrisons asked the public to put forward people they believed should be recognised for their contributions to the town in four categories as part of its Moments of Hope Awards.

The store handed out goodies to a local hero, outstanding organisation, a people’s choice and an eco warrior award.

Caroline Morgan and her band of volunteers at the Douglas Park Project were given the organisation award for their work upgrading the much-loved green space.

Morrisons community champion Lorraine Nicol has hailed the volunteers for their effort to make sure the park is a real asset to the town.

She said: “Caroline has been volunteering her time to bring the once neglected Douglas Park back to life over the last couple of years and has done a tremendous job.

“The team also organises tours, talks, scavenger hunts and various activities for children and schools within the town, and the park has been a home for various community groups during the pandemic.

“The park is looking beautiful and is an absolute asset to the town, and the volunteers are very worthy of this award.”

Deborah Ringrose and Denise Ann Murray were presented with the hero and people’s choice awards for their work with the toddlers' group at St John’s.

Lorraine added: “Both ladies have worked tirelessly as childminders through the pandemic and reopened the hugely popular sessions at St John's.

“They volunteer their time to organise the group on a weekly basis and make sure every child, parent and carer feels welcome and included.

“The group has brought social opportunities and some much-needed hope for people following the pandemic. It is an asset to the town and the children love it.”

The final winner was Helen Rumbold, who took home the eco warrior award for her efforts towards keeping Largs tidy through regular beach cleans.

Lorraine added: “Helen organises these on a regular basis and has a great team of volunteers behind her."

Helen said: "I would like to thank everyone who has helped with the beach cleans. They are very much a team effort, and I dedicate the award to the whole group.”
