LARGS Community Council have received £3,000 from the Rio Stakis Charitable Foundation to help improve food provision for people in need.

A new sub committee has been formed by the community council which will see the group consult with foodbanks and other organisations about increasing access to food for families.

The project will see Largs Community Council consult with foodbanks to assist with delivery to people with access difficulties.

The group held its first meeting at Inverclyde Sports Centre on Friday, attended by community councillors Wendy Thomson and Patricia Perman, who are members of the Largs Foodbank.

Options discussed include creating a community soup kitchen, setting up cook schools to teach basic cooking skills and linking up with the NHS Health and Social Care.

The community council have also made contact with the Church of Nazarene, who cook meals for locals which are delivered by the Largs Community Resilience Team.

Robbie Stevenson of Largs Community Council said: "Groups can get in touch with us via our email address largscommunitycouncilofficial@gmail.com

"We want to help get food to the people who need it most. That might be through giving people a fridge to help them store food or a microwave for the heating of pre-prepared meals."

The £3,000 funding comes after the construction of a new footbridge in the back hills of the town by Halkshill Estate owner Andros Stakis.
