A typical household energy bill is set to rise to over £3,500 in October.
The energy price cap is currently £1,971 for the average household but this is due to rise by a staggering 80 per cent.
The price of electricity will rise on average from 28p per kWh to 52p in October to December.
Further forecasting suggests that a typical bill could hit £5,400 in January and £6,600 from April next year.
Money Saving Expert's Martin Lewis told BBC Radio 4's Today programme it is a "horrendous situation".
He said: "It's a catastrophe... unaffordable, terrible."
"This is shocking but it is not a surprise... Why have we got to this announcement stage and still no help?"
