Largs Thistle legend George Wall's regular football column...

My plan on Saturday was to watch the first half of Ardrossan Winton Rovers v Port Glasgow thinking it would be a good competitive game then head to Largs for the second half of the game v Cambuslang Rangers.
Well the referee abandoning the Largs game messed up that plan.
Not the first time a game has been abandoned at Barrfields because of the wind.
Ex Largs President Gordon Law who I met at Ardrossan reminded me of a game I played in against Glenafton nearly 40 years ago when the ref abandoned the game at Barrfields for the exact same thing.
We were 3-0 down at the time and could not get the ball out of our 18 yard box. Rightly so I thought at the time the ref stopped the game. Gordon informed me that the ref was then formally known as the “Windy Ref” by his colleagues and that name stuck until he gave up the game.
The Winton v Port game was not as competitive as I thought it would be with Winton easily winning 5-0 with all goals scored in the first half.
The 4th round draw of the Scottish Junior Cup has thrown up a cracker, Cumnock v Auchinleck Talbot. For me this is what the “juniors” are all about, fierce rivalry between two local communities that support their local team. A few years back I was at the game where the mounted policeman decided he needed to invade the pitch. Let’s hope nothing like that happens this time but a similar firecracker of a game would be good.
Anyone see the highlights of the Charlton v Ipswich game. Ipswich go 4-2 up in “Fergie” time but Charlton pulled it back to 4-4. That should tell everyone not to leave a game early . The ref blew the final whistle after 99 mins. The way VAR is going in Scotland our games are going to finish around that time.
This weekend I am pulling on my boots again to play in a charity game at Maryhill. One of my ex players there has arranged a game in aid of Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH). It’s Rangers v Celtic with a few well known faces on both sides, I am really looking forward to this one.
