Two people were taken to hospital following a 12-car pile up on the A78 this morning.
The incident happened just before 10am near the Eglinton Interchange.
Police, fire and ambulance crews raced to the scene as traffic built up behind the accident for several hours.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9:40 am on Thursday, 15 December, police received a report of a multiple vehicle crash on the A78 southbound near to Eglington Interchange, Irvine.
"Emergency services attended the crash which involved 12 vehicles.
"Two people were taken by ambulance to the University Hospital Crosshouse, Kilmarnock.
"The southbound carriageway was closed until around 12.30 pm on Thursday, 15 December 2022.
"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."
