Football columnist George Wall reflects on the World Cup

It was a great World Cup final, with lots of good football and excitement.
Congratulations to Argentina. They had the goalie of the tournament, the young player of the tournament and the player of tournament. It takes a team to win the World Cup not just one man although having Messi does help.
France with a number of players injured that did not make the tournament did they miss them?
They certainly missed something, a poor poor performance in that first half where they even put on two subs five minutes before half time. What a brave decision by the manager. It took them though to their penalty kick to waken them up. Mbappe never kicked a ball in the game until he took the penalty then what a equaliser.

What a performance and what a game after that, outstanding. After 90 minutes and extra time I thought the draw was the correct result. Is Mbappe now the natural successor to Messi and Ronaldo ?
I loved Ally McCoist’ s comment about Mbappe being the first person to score a hat trick in a World Cup final where all three were over the line.
It was enjoyable also to see a referee who I thought had a good game, no drama, no dodgy decisions, maybe could have booked more but didn’t and no VAR intervention - well done.
I did really enjoy this World Cup especially the final but overall it was not as good as Mexico 1970 or Spain 1982.
I am old enough to remember both of these. My son Jamie though did say this was the best World Cup he had watched.
Pele and Diego Maradona are always held up as the greatest players of all time, Will Messi now join them now that he has the final piece of the jigsaw in a World Cup Winners medal, I think so.
Fingers crossed Scotland get to the next tournament .
