FOOTBALLERS from across the community staged their own Match of the Day to provide a final push for Alara Kavak's charity challenge.

The event saw players of all ages - including News reporter Adam Lyon - pull on their boots at the Weir 3G indoor sports centre at Inverclyde to blow the final whistle on the incredible £80,000 fundraising effort to send the three-year-old Largs tot to America for pioneering surgery to let her walk for the first time.

The goals were certainly flying in throughout the day during a cavalcade of effort, enthusiasm and laughter.

The final score for the event was a whopping £5994, raised by 414 players aged three to 78.

Local postie Craig McDonald played at 4am before going on his daily rounds while Largs Thistle manager Stuart Davidson's was one of the first on the park before heading to the club's clash with Cumnock.

Alarm clocks were pinging at all hours of the night to make sure the action was continuous for a full 24 hours.

Alara's mum Fiona said: "It was an incredible weekend. A massive thank you to Ross Irvin, Tiffany Irvin, Billy Rumbold, Gregor Orr and James Craddock for helping make this happen.

"The whole town was talking about it and it just had a real buzz about it, especially as we approached our target.

"Thank you to every single person that came, played and generously donated round the clock."
