A NOTORIOUS accident blackspot on the road into Largs could be set for speed cameras following a number of serious accidents in recent months.

Councillor Todd Ferguson has revealed consultations are underway with Safety Camera Scotland to install devices on the A760 between Largs and the Garnock Valley.

The Conservative councillor says there have been too many fatalities on the roads around Largs - and is determined to try and make them safer.

He said: “Drivers need to slow down on the Haylie Brae before we have another fatality. Last year we saw a marked increase in the number of terrible tragedies on our local road network.

“Unbelievably, even after this, some drivers still think that they can drive in a dangerous and irresponsible manner.

“It is absolutely crazy that drivers are overtaking on blind corners, travelling at speeds significantly exceeding the 60mph limit and are oblivious to adjusting their driving to suit the conditions.

“To try and make the route better I have been in further discussions with stakeholders about measures to improve safety."

Cllr Ferguson reveals a safety audit is being done by the council - and that the possibility of speed cameras is one option on the table.

He explained: “It has been agreed that a full assessment of the A760 will be undertaken by NAC roads department to see where enhanced road markings and hazard signage can be installed.

“Additionally, consultations are now underway with Safety Cameras Scotland to investigate the possibility of speed cameras on the A760.

“This is the preferred option because if drivers are not going to slow down themselves then enforcement is the only way to keep other road users safe."

Independent councillor Ian Murdoch believes that despite the benefit of cameras, further measures are needed to properly tackle the issue.

He said: “I have had meetings in the past with Police Scotland, the council and others over the stretch of road near the crematorium.

“We were looking to install double solid white lines to ensure no overtaking there, but it was never taken forward.

“Speed cameras can be effective, but there are many places where the devices are not even active - in some instances the issues on the A760 are about people going too slow rather than too fast.

“I think what we need is a public meeting to discuss the A760 and do a full safety audit, because in my opinion, speed cameras will not provide a proper solution."
