Largs Thistle staged a remarkable last gasp escape from the relegation trapdoor 24 years ago in 1999.

Thistle snatched a last gasp winner in the 93rd minute to finally see off plucky second division side Lugar in an almighty battle.

The manager was Sandy MacLean in his first of three spells as manager.

Largs were going into the second leg after a recording a nervy first leg lead thanks to a solitary Andy Newman strike but if fans thought that was edgy, they had seen nothing yet!

On 16 minutes, Thistle had the ball in the back of the net after top scorer Martin Gray finished of from a downward header from Derek Rae - but the linesman intervened and it was ruled out.

Newman and Jim 'Tiger' McNally both spurned good openings - and next Lugar levelled the tie with their first shot on target on the day courtesy of dangerous and experiencd marksman Miles Gilluley with a sure footed 12 yard volley.

This gave the home side renewed confidence as Largs defender Malcolm Muir denied Lugar their second with aheadaer off the line from Gilluley.

Gordon Graham then made a vital clearance to deny Lugar after they made a good start to the second half.

These were nervous moments but Largs edged ahead on 55 minutes after McNally tumbled in the penalty box as Rae, pictured below, coolly converted to put Thistle a goal ahead on aggregate, and 1-1 on the day .

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

Newman and Rae combined to set up McNally who directed the ball into the top right corner on 65 minutes to give Largs a crucial two goal cushion.

But Lugar were gifted a goal after an error from keeper John Clark's kick-out, and Gilluley could not believe his luck to fire the ball home.

With six minutes of regulation time to go, Ian Dick muscled his way past Largs defenders and hit a composed strike past Clark to draw level on aggregate.

With the tie appearing to be heading into extra time, a late Martin Gray shot was handled by a Craigmark defender on the line and the ref awarded Largs a spot kick in the 93rd minute.

Silky midfielder Rae showed he also had composure as he converted from the spot to secure Thistle's safety in the top flight in the most dramatic of circumstances.
