A group 90 ladies are set to walk, cycle and swim around Cumbrae this summer to raise money for a young girl with a rare genetic condition.

The woman from the small village of Law in South Lanarkshire have been hosting charity challenges on the island for a decade – raising over £130,000 for good causes.

This June, the ladies will be aiming to raise thousands for three-year-old Ruby McGhee, who was diagnosed with Xia Gibbs Syndrome in 2021 at just 18-months-old.

The neurodevelopmental disorder, which affects one in 39 million people, causes physical and intellectual disability.

The kind-hearted women are now set to descend on Cumbrae for their latest day of fundraising with a twist.

Organiser Mairi McMinn reveals the ladies are taking on the island triathlon to make Ruby’s life easier moving forward.

She said: Ruby will require expensive services and equipment throughout her years to make her life a little easier.

“We are holding this event to give a helping hand to her parents with these large financial outputs they will face.

“The family are from Wishaw and we are always looking to support locals in need with our fundraising day, so this was the perfect match.

“We will be walking five miles, cycling another five and then having a dip in the Clyde at the end in a mini-triathlon style.

“There are 90 ladies taking part as well as Ruby’s uncle David and his family who are doing their own fundraising down in Liverpool.

“Ruby is the daughter, granddaughter, niece or cousin of about half the women taking part which is why we are doing this one more time.”

Last year was set to be the ladies’ tenth and final fundraiser, however the group are coming back to the island one final time for this special cause.

Mairi has hailed the Cumbrae community for their support over the past decade, and knows they will be up to the task one last time.

She said: “Millport has welcomed us from day one, especially Lesley and her fantastic team at the Newton Bar.

“Millport ladies day is a very special day in all our calendars and is a well-known event in our community even though it is a fair distance away.

“It’s a great day out supported by our whole community here in Law village and by the Glasgow ladies who also come to participate.”

Mairi is urging people to donate if they can, to help young Ruby live a more comfortable life with her condition.

She added: “We appreciate times are hard but both the family and I would be extremely grateful for any donations possible.

“Thank you in advance from our team, we truly appreciate your support.”
