North Ayrshire Provost Anthea Dickson paid a special visit to Millport Town Hall as phase one of renovation works near completion.

The project, spearheaded by local residents with support from the council, will include a heritage centre, kitchen, men’s shed, community garden, main hall and two flats for letting.

The first phase of the project is set to be completed later this year, before a second phase to install the heritage centre begins.

Provost Dickson praised the work of the community during her visit, and admits she is looking forward to future visits as further progress is made.

She said: “It has been fantastic meeting with Angie McCallum, chair of the charity and the volunteers who have done an absolutely superb job of breathing new life into the town.

“The ongoing restoration is no mean feat, as the 144-year-old building has come with its challenges, however I have been so impressed by their relentless drive, dedication and commitment.

“I applaud the work of everyone involved because this project really is a triumph – one of which the whole community should be so very proud.

Angie McCallum, charity chair, added: “It has been a real pleasure to welcome the provost to Millport Town Hall.

“The support we have received from the council and the government compounds our belief that this community run-project will ensure that Cumbrae has increased strength, capacity and infrastructure.

“The support of our community and volunteers keep us going on this journey and once again, the Trustees would like to thank them.
