Cunninghame North MSP Kenneth Gibson met with MPs from Sri Lanka in the Scottish Parliament in a special visit.

The SNP MSP attended the meeting in his role as part of the finance and public administration committee in Holyrood.

The meeting aimed to teach the Sri Lanka delegation about the processes of finance committees in the Scottish Parliament, to help them develop their own oversight in their own government.

Mr Gibson believes the special meeting was important for both sides, with lots learned from each other to take back to their respective committees.

He said: “The purpose of their visit was to understand our committee processes through an inclusion perspective.

“It was also to study best practices on monitoring the executive on economic, financial and social justice decisions.

“Given Sri Lanka’s debt relief process with the International Monetary Fund and its government’s role in managing it transparently under parliamentary oversight, it was pivotal that the chairs of relevant committees understand the importance of such processes.

“The overall aim was for the delegation to understand and strengthen the synergies between different parliamentary committees, identifying effective strategies to enhance the work of their own committees.

“It was a very interesting and constructive engagement which we hope to continue in the months and years ahead.”
