This year marks the 80th anniversary of the HMS Dasher tragedy in the Firth of Clyde.

The Royal British Legion Scotland will be holding an HMS Dasher Memorial weekend 24th - 26th March to commemorate the event.

Events will commence on Friday, March 25 and run until Sunday, March 27.

HMS Dasher was a converted aircraft carrier which mysteriously exploded on March 27 of 1943, during the second world war, in the Clyde between Arran and Ardrossan.

Of the 528 crew on board, 379 lost their lives and the remains of the carrier lie some 140 metres below the waters in the Firth of Clyde. The site is the designated official war grave.

Every year the community of Ardrossan, who played a major role helping survivors on the night, come together with relatives of the Dasher crew and those wishing to pay their respects in a weekend of remembrance.

From Friday, March 24 until Sunday, March 26, memorial events will be held to mark the 80th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Dasher.

Relatives and members of the public are invited to commemorative events to mark this important anniversary which will culminate on March 26 with a special parade at the ‘Dasher’ memorial in Ardrossan.
