A PROMINENT Largs business has closed its doors after more than four decades in the town – but hope remains the space can be filled quickly.

Glen’s Euronics at the corner of Main Street and Aitken Street shut for the final time last week after over 40 years of trading.

The premises is now up for let, with the branch closing due to retirement.

The store was previously put up for sale with a £70,000 price tag several years ago, but owner June Friel insisted at the time that 'the business was going nowhere'.

The original Glens was established over 40 years ago, supplying, and installing a huge range of kitchen appliances and home electronic goods.

Despite the news, local councillors remain hopeful that the prime town centre space will be taken on within the next few months.

Councillor Tom Marshall said: “You’ve got to stay positive because it is a prominent site and you hope a business out would find it attractive.

“Largs has a great variety of chains and smaller independent shops, and hopefully we can see something come in that will benefit the town.

“I hope it’s not another charity shop because at the moment we have far too many of them for a town of this size.

“I would like to see a general clothes shop, especially for men, because we are about to lose M&Co across the road.

“A lot of older people in the area don’t have access to the internet, so some kind of place for them to shop in person would be first class."

Fellow councillor Ian Murdoch believes the town remains a draw to new businesses - and doesn’t believe the shopfront will be empty for long.

He explained: “It is obviously disappointing as it was a prominent name in Largs, but I am not overly concerned.

“Shops that do become empty here generally don’t lie that way for very long, and we only have a few that have been unused for any length of time.

“I am very confident we will find someone who will want to move in as it is a good site with a lot of floor space.

“There are some towns who have suffered as a result of the current economic downturn and are finding it difficult, but I don’t think Largs falls into that bracket.”

A Glen's spokesperson said: “We would like to thank all our customers for their many years of support.”
