PUPILS at St Mary’s Primary in Largs are signing from the rooftops after triumphing in a prestigious schools choir competition.

The talented young songbirds took first place at the Ayrshire Music Festival – winning the Kathleen Dippie Memorial Shield.

Choir organiser Jane McDonald reveals the current choir only restarted in October last year after being put on hold due to the pandemic.

She explained: “We formed the choir in October 2022 in response to pupil interest after our previous choir was disbanded due to Covid restrictions.

“We began by learning some songs to sing at our Christmas carol concert, which went down a treat with pupils and staff.

“We also showcased these songs at Yuletide and performed for the residents of Haylie House who really enjoyed it."

Jane says the school was shocked to find out it had taken home the grand prize.

She said: “We had no expectations going into the competition as it had been some years since the school had entered.

“The children were over the moon when our name was announced and celebrated all the way home to Largs.”

On top of the win, the school was contacted after the event to reveal the talented choir had won a second honour.

Jane added: “We were contacted by festival organisers and received the exciting news that we have also won The Saville Trophy.

“This is awarded for the best choir performance from all the choirs participating in primary and secondary.

“We are absolutely blown away to receive this award and could not be prouder of our little choir here at St Mary’s.”
