THE team behind a community hub set up in Skelmorlie to bring the village together during the colder months has been reflecting on a successful first winter.

The hub's purpose was to save local residents money on escalating fuel bills and provide some cheer at the same time.

Its progress has been hailed by the North Coast Locality meeting which is attended by local North Ayrshire councillors.

The Skelmorlie Hub has been a success thanks to the support of the volunteers, The Shore Shack (soup), the Village Shop (tea, coffee etc) and a financial donation from NAC and a few locals.

The Skelmorlie Community Association, which manages the village's community centre, where the hub is located, provided the facility, along with the necessary equipment and support.

A spokesperson said: "It has provided a drop in facility within our community centre that is open to anyone looking for some company.

"The community hub has run for a total of 15 weeks over winter - and has a squad of volunteers and kitchen staf to help make sure things run smoothly.

"The group hopes to be able to offer a similar facility next year subject to being able to aquire funding."

Staff from two local businesses - the village shop and the Shore Shack - rallied round and provided donations of supplies throughout the winter months.

Numbers have been growing with approximately 25 locals visiting the last event.

There is space and games for the children and a large hall for them to run around in and burn off some energy.
