AN ENERGETIC Largs woman is in training to take on the Glasgow Kiltwalk for charity this weekend.

Lizzy Barbour will walk the 23 miles from Glasgow to Balloch for Parent Network Scotland (PNS) on Sunday, April 30.

The plan is for the money she raises to help send families on much-needed breaks.

Lizzy first got involved with the charity after using the service as a parent herself - and now works for the organisation.

She explained: “I got involved looking for support about eight or nine years ago, and over the years I have built up my capacity to deliver courses for others.

“We work with single parents, those who have children with additional support needs, families experiencing trauma, and anything else that can be a disadvantage.

“It’s all about providing opportunities, new experiences and support for the families, and to make it as easy as possible for the parents.

“We are taking on the Kiltwalk to raise money for extra trips and activities that our regular funding doesn’t support.”

Lizzy and her fellow walkers for Parent Network Scotland are all taking on different distances on the 23-mile route.

She said: “I am walking alongside a lot of our parent volunteers from all over North Ayrshire, as well as Monty, our dog ambassador.

“I’ll be doing the big distance, with some of our parents taking on the middle distance, and families with children doing the smaller walk.

“We have been going out on some walks at weekends to try and get used to the distance so it’s not too much of a surprise on the day.

“I’ve done fund-raising walks in the past but this is new for some of our parent group leaders and will be a big step for them.”

The charity runs trips throughout the year, and is aiming to raise £1,000 from the Kiltwalk to finance them for 2023.

Lizzy added: “We’ve set everyone an individual target of £100 that we are all trying to reach with support of family and friends.

“We do fund-raising throughout the year which helps us do all our creative activities outwith our regular funding.

“We often do trips in the summer to the likes of Kelburn Castle, so £1,000 would go a long way towards a day like that.”
