A Largs Academy athlete is jumping for joy after being named the top high jumper in Scotland at the Indoor UK National Championships.

Innes McNicol, a third year pupil, came third behind two English youngsters in the U15 boys section.

The talented athlete, who has collected an array of honours across his short career so far, has aims of making it to the Olympics one day.

Mum Victoria says she is so proud of her son.

She said: “Innes has been competing in multiple events but now he enjoys high jump the most and I’m so proud of his achievements.

“At the Scottish Indoor National Championship he jumped a new personal best of 1.63m and received a bronze medal.

“The top two were from England as the event is open to all British athletes so technically he was third in Britain and top of the Scottish athletes.

“He got a gold at Scottish Schools in June last year and he is aiming to do well at the same competition in June in Grangemouth.”

Victoria says Innes has dreams of making it to the highest stage.

She explained: “He has been working with a new jumps coach at Emirates Arena called John Davie who has been excellent.

“He is aiming to be part of the Scottish International Athletics Board where he trains & competes with British athletes at a training camp abroad.

“This is for 17-year-olds and upwards so he has two years to fulfil his dream of being an Olympian and representing Scotland on the international stage.”

Innes’ younger brother Lachlan, a first year at Largs Academy, also put in a strong showing to finish fourth for his age group.

The talent in the family doesn’t stop there, with sibling Harris a talented youngster with previous success in hurdles, shot put, long jump and high jump.
