Two kind-hearted Mod-lovers put their best foot forward to raise over £2,700 for charity after a 50 mile walk around Cumbrae.

Lyndsay Jones and Gerard Mallon traversed the island five times over three days in March in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The pair were walking as part of the March of the Mods, a national fundraiser which has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity over the years.

Lyndsay admits the March weather wasn’t ideal, but the pair were determined not to let it get the better of their challenge.

She said: “The Friday was lovely with beautiful weather, and we did our first two laps with just our charity t-shirts on.

“We managed another two laps on the Saturday when it stayed dry, before completing our final ten miles on Sunday morning.

“Unfortunately our final circuit of the island was completed in pouring rain and we got soaked to the skin.

“In total we walked over 52 miles across the three days, and while my legs weren’t too bad the blisters on my feet were pretty painful.”

The pair admit the walking could have got monotonous quickly, so were thankful for the kindness of local businesses who helped break up their challenge.

Lyndsay explained: “We had a nice stop off at Fintry Bay, and the owner kindly said we could get a free drink every time we passed there.

“That broke up the walk a little bit and honestly kept us going, to know that such lovely people were waiting for us on every trip round.

“Each circuit did take a good few hours so I think Gerard and I know a lot more about each other now than we did before.

“We also stopped to get pictures at all of the island’s landmarks so that helped to keep us on our toes too.”

Lyndsay admits the pair are over the moon at their total amount, after setting an initial target of just £500 before they set off.

She added: “The end result is excellent given that we thought raising £500 would have been a reasonable amount to aim for.

“A lot of people don’t like donating online so we got plenty of cash handed to us, and we also had sponsor forms which filled up really quickly.

“We had work mates, family, friends and even regulars in a wee pub I go to all donate, everyone was so generous."
