Neglected playparks in Largs are to get a makeover with new equipment and repairs carried out after one swing park was branded ‘dangerous’.

Both Anderson Park and Aubery were highlighted during the recent community council meeting as areas which need an upgrade.

It comes after the recent News story of a major investment in playparks in Ayrshire, with Scott Park set to get an upgrade and investment over the next year.

However, community council secretary Linda Smith was unhappy at the state of two other parks in the town - and received backing from her colleague Patricia Perman, pictured.

Linda said: “The Aubery swing park is very poor and it tends to get neglected as it is far along the seafront.

“The toilet for example is in a disgraceful situation with the women’s toilet having been out of order over recent years, if it can’t be fixed the gents toilet should be made into a unisex toilet.

“The playpark is poor and it is a shame as it can be busy and it would be nice to have more equipment there.”

Chairman Jim Phillips agreed and added: “It is a well used playpark in a scenic spot in town and should be looked into.”

Independent councillor Ian Murdoch told the meeting that he was very much in agreement and has already spoken to North Ayrshire Council on the matter after a walkthrough with Thomas Reaney of the council’s Streetscene team.

He said: “I was on a walk around Largs seafront alongside councillor Eleanor Collier and one of the things I raised with Thomas was that I wanted to see a large scale improved playpark at Aubery.”

The area is currently being repainted - but Ian said he hoped to press for additional improvements at the swing park area.

Cllr Tom Marshall said he went on his own walk with Thomas Reaney and said: “You are right - I can go way back and can remember when Aubery used to have a lot of activities. It is something that should be developed.”

Patricia said: “I hope that the council could also look at Anderson Park as it has come into a very bad state and it is embarrassing. I take my granddaughter.

“Some areas are covered in green moss and the climbing frame is chipped.

“It is very shabby looking and a busy park and kids love to play football and basketball there and it is very popular.”

Linda agreed - and said that the area was very bad for moss at the rubber matting areas.

She said: “It is dangerous as it is all covered in green moss and the kids could come to grief.

“The paint on that climbing frame is chipped and children could be injured by that.”

Conservative councillor Tom Marshall said he would raise the issue with the council.
