A FAIRLIE mum says she fears her council house could be flooded the next time a big storm hits the village.

Pam McIntyre, 36, of Keppenburn Avenue, has been living in her property for the past three years.

She says that recent heavy showers have seen her garden ruined beyond recognition - and she fears the next big rainfall could see her house flooded.

The mother of three boys posted alarming pictures of her back garden path submerged with water running off the back hills towards her property.

In a state of alarm, she contacted North Ayrshire Council, and has had a housing officer out twice to her property - but she said no action has yet been taken to prevent another dangerous deluge.

After making a plea for help, the News stepped in - and the council now says it is considering flood resilience measures at the location.

Pam said: "It is a major concern.

"All the bins are located in the back garden along with my washing - but I wasn't expected a swimming pool in my back garden.

"It is just a matter of time before it is the house that is next. Myself and my neighbours are all concerned regarding the situation.

"We are seeing heavier rainfall now and again, and it is happening more and more on a regular basis.

"It is the very last thing we need.

"We need sandbags to try and stop it rising any further, as the big fear is that we wake up one morning and come down the stairs to find the ground level flooded.

"The council should be on the ball with this when it comes to climate change - and flooding - but despite twice having the visit of a council housing officer to examine the situation, nothing meaningful has happened.

"I didn't know what to do. The last time it happened on a Tuesday evening - some poeple recommended that I phoned the fire brigade but I contacted the council and, like I say, nothing happened. I had to fend for myself.

"It is a worry that I can't really get any assistance on this. It is more scary the fact that my kitchen and living room could get flooded next.

"I normally go and cut my grass in the nice weather but the garden has been ruined because of the flooding.

"Next door, gardens have also been ruined as well.

"It is all this one side of the street which is affected. It is coming right up to the back steps, and the water is going to come in at some point and I am worried that my kitchen is going to be full of dampness."

Pam said the last downpour began at around 4.30pm one afternoon - and that by 8pm "it was a swimming pool at our back garden".

She continued: "Even if they could put a wee drain in the garden - I don't mind them digging up the garden to put in a drain as it has already become a mud pen.

"We used to have a lovely bit of garden back there. Now it has all been destroyed.

"It is like a chicken pen back there now.

"It is just a matter of time before the house gets it. It really needs to be resolved."

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “Enquiries are being made to confirm ownership of the land behind Ms McIntyre’s home as it appears that water is running off sloping moorland at the rear of the property and into the garden.

“Council-maintained culvert screens have been checked, and these are free from debris.

“The ground is steeply inclined, meaning this type of flooding is most likely to happen during or immediately after periods of intense rainfall, and cannot be easily predicated or prevented.

“We have not been informed previously of issues with flooding at this location, and flood resilience measures may need to be considered in future.

“We have contacted Ms McIntyre to discuss her concerns and work is being arranged to tidy up and reseed the grass in her upper garden.

"A housing officer will also visit her in the coming days.”
