West Scotland MSP Jamie Greene has hit out at the Scottish Government over its "failure" to listen to local residents about the future of the Largs-Cumbrae season pass, which looks set to be axed.

CalMac’s new ‘Ar Turas’ ticketing system will lead to the loss of the historic discount for island residents, despite calls from the community for the benefits of the season pass to be retained.

The loss of the season pass means that the costs of travel will become unaffordable for many residents, with some adding that they may have to leave Cumbrae altogether.

Conservative MSP Jamie Greene blasted the government's "appalling approach" and said: “This may be a new government, but there’s nothing new about its appalling approach towards our island communities which continues to be one of ignorance.

“Cumbrae residents have relied on the season pass discount for many years and now the SNP has essentially confirmed that it’s been removed from the new system.

“Every day hundreds of island residents commute to and from the mainland and this rise in price will make that journey unaffordable for many.

“I will keep pushing on this issue at every level until the Scottish Government gives this important issue the attention it deserves.”

Kevin Stewart, minister for transport, says fares will continue to be reviewed after the new ticketing system comes into place across the network.

He said: “CalMac has continued the sale of one-month season ticket during the interim period up to one month prior to Ar Turas go-live to allow for the tickets to 'run-out'.

“CalMac has a focus on the go-live event to ensure minimal disruption to ferry users on cut over which is an intense process for CalMac staff.

“The Ar Turas eBooking system has been thoroughly tested during its development phase and will bring improved benefits for both customers and staff.

“Transport Scotland will continue to review fares policy across the network as part of our Fair Fares Review and Islands Connectivity Plan.”
