A new dance craze is kicking off in Largs with the group even sporting their own name - the Largs Liners!

In February 2022 the Opportunities in Retirement (OIR) organisation set up a beginner’s line dancing class at Halkshill Bowling Club after considerable interest had been expressed in the activity.

The class has been taking place every Monday morning since then and has proven to be a great success.

Every week, the class thoroughly enjoys the challenge of learning one or two new dances, while trying, and sometimes succeeding, in remembering the dances learned the previous week.

The dance repertoire of the class is now quite extensive, and even though it has advanced from complete beginner’s routines to slightly more advanced ones, new members to the class are still given a good grounding in the basic routines.

As well as the weekly classes, the group enjoy other social events over and above.

In December the class held a Christmas lunch at the bowling club where a lovely meal of hearty lentil soup, sandwiches and sausage rolls was enjoyed as well as a variety of delicious  desserts.

Then in February the group attended a line dancing BYOB evening in Irvine. This was a fantastic night, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed taking to the floor for all their favourite dances. Another of these evenings has been arranged for May.

The group also recently attended a line dancing event at the Grand Ole Opry in Glasgow which was quite an experience.

Apart from all the brilliant line dancing fun, there was jive dancing, a Wild West shoot out which was hugely entertaining as well as a raffle and bingo.  The evening ended with a tribute to all the men and women lost from both sides in the American Civil War. This is known as the American Trilogy.

The ‘Largs Liners’ felt as if they were truly Stateside and are now looking forward to their next visit.

A spokesperson said: "The class is an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to find out more about line dancing and to ‘give it a go’. The music is terrific too and includes lots of different genres, from the traditional Country and Western to pop, Latin, rock and roll and disco.

"It is a great fun activity which certainly helps keep mind and body active and is excellent value at only £6 per class."

As the class operates under the auspices of the OIR, attendees must take out a membership of the OIR (£12 per year), however before deciding to join the class (and OIR) permanently, potential new members may attend the class for a two-week trial.

Anyone interested in joining should contact Moira MacNab on 07806 593727.
