A brave Largs mum is taking on a 50-mile walking challenge in aid of Ayrshire Cancer Support just months after getting the all-clear from doctors after a battle with breast cancer.

Lauren Trainer, 27, was diagnosed in 2022 and was left over the moon earlier this year when she got the good news.

Lauren, who lives with partner Ryan and daughter Katie, is now set to walk 50 miles throughout May to raise vital funds for a charity that helped her during her cancer battle.

She explained: “I decided to take on this challenge as this month marks my one year anniversary since my cancer diagnosis.

“Since I am now in remission I wanted to do something nice and give back to the people who helped me through a hard time.

“Ayrshire Cancer Support has lots of amazing volunteer drivers, and I met so many of them when I used them for transport to the Beatson every day for three weeks in February this year.

“This took a lot of stress away from me and my family having them available to take me, not to mention the costs on fuel these days.

“As the charity runs on donations I would like to raise funds so that they can continue the wonderful work they provide.”

Lauren admits the distance will be a huge challenge for her, as she is still recovering from her treatment just a few months ago.

She said: “I am aiming to walk so many miles a week to get to my overall goal of 50 miles within the month.

“I do enjoy walking, especially around Largs, but this will be a challenge for me as my legs and joints do get sore.

“I am spreading the walking over a month because I still have good and bad days as my body still hasn't fully recovered so I didn't want to push myself too hard.”

Lauren is urging the Largs community to get behind her fund-raiser by contributing cash to allow the charity to keep providing its vital service.

She added: “I have set a target of £250 but would just love to raise as much as I can as every penny counts for the charity.

“They are very friendly and approachable and at first I was shy to ask for their help but I'm so glad that I did.

“To anyone who is thinking of donating, this charity needs donations to keep going because there are so many people in Ayrshire using this service.

“It’s very sad that cancer is currently on the rise but this charity is there to help and take some of the pressure off of families and those affected.

“Life after cancer must go on and they helped me realise this. Thank you to everyone who helped me throughout my diagnosis and continues to support me now.”
